Story about Flip doesn't hold up

Article published August 3, 2007

After recent letters regarding Findlay K-9 Officer Flip's death, I feel that I should express my feelings about the situation, seeing as how I'm related to both Cindy Smith and Nicole McCahan, girlfriend of the so-called "dog killer" Steve Vanderhoff.

Flip's last minutes are something of Hollywood lore: Normally good tempered dog escapes, terrorizes family, then the father triumphantly kills it before the dog could maul the baby. In my opinion, that story is true fiction.

Why would this dog, who days earlier was playing with children and other dogs according to the Howl-a-Day Inn, suddenly turn vicious and attack a family? That in itself is truly suspicious, considering Flip wouldn't attack without his handler giving him orders in German.

If Mr. Vanderhoff was able to make it from his car into the house with the baby, why didn't he just call the police?

After meeting Deeter's new K-9 Spike, Nicole definitely deserves an Oscar for her performance on July 17's audio interview. She said, "... the way the new dog charged me, four weeks ago, on a Sunday morning at 9 o'clock in the morning, I know the fear that was in me."

That is pretty weird. I spent almost an hour with Spike last weekend, and the most aggressive thing he did to me was lick my hand.
