Rebel
Rebel is a 7 year old red and white Lurcher. His proud parents are Susan and Bill Hollington. A Lurcher is not a purebred dog, but is of a definite type, usually having a member of the Greyhound family as one of its parents. In Rebel’s case, he was born to a Greyhound mom. Lurchers look a little different because they don’t have a ‘pure’ Greyhound appearance.
Lurcher’s are excellent hunting dogs. Rebel was to be used for breeding hunting dogs. Rebel’s left ear was ‘notched’ to show he was a breeder. Unfortunately, Rebel would not do what they wanted him to do, so he went to a kill only shelter. Rebel was rescued from that shelter by Team Greyhound Adoption of Ohio. He was kenneled and then was sent to Mansfield State Prison for training under the Greyhound program.

After Rebel was ‘paroled’ for good behavior, he was placed in what was to be his forever home. Rebel was removed after two years from his ‘forever’ home, due to numerous conflicts and complaints about his ‘behavior’, though the owners admitted to excessively crating him. Not good when you’re a Lurcher, they require a lot of exercise. So back to a foster care Rebel goes. Rebel’s luck was about to change. He went to a great foster mom who saw that Rebel was a perfect dog.
Susan and Bill had a Greyhound and it died. The President of Team Greyhound Adoption called them when she learned of their loss. She said a “big red boy needed them.” The Hollington’s met Rebel and it was love at first sight! Rebel has been part of their family for two years and four months now. Rebel also has a sister, Pappini. She is a little Italian Greyhound and quite the ‘diva.’

Rebel became a guest at day care and part of OUR family on November 7, 2005. We love Rebel. He is a real sweetheart. He has a calm and gentle nature. When Rebel comes to day care to hang out with all of his furry friends, he brings along his sister Pappini to join in the fun. We get the pleasure of their company usually a couple days a week from the spring time through the fall as they spend their winters in Florida and their summers in Ohio and Michigan.
Shortly after adopting Rebel, the Hollington’s discovered he had some health problems. After some tests were done, it was found the Rebel has a serious thyroid problem. But worse, he suffers from poly-myositis, which means the muscles in his body are deteriorating. Meds keep him going and he has his good days and his bad days. Most days he is well enough to join us at day care. That’s ALWAYS a good day! Rebel loves to be outside in the fresh air and relax in the sun.

We miss seeing Rebel and Pappini in the cold months and always look forward to spring when we know it won’t be long till we can see our friends once again. It is reported that Rebel loves to travel. Well, he has traveled his way right into our hearts. He has left his paw prints on our hearts forever and that is why he is our dog of the month for March.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Susan and Bill on Rebel’s behalf for opening their hearts and giving Rebel a well deserved loving and forever home. Bless you.
