Chancey
Chancey is a 13 year old Shih Tzu. Her proud parent is Beth Ann Nissen. Chancey had a ruff start. She was a "rescue" dog who lived with three different families before someone asked Beth Ann to take her. None of the owners took the time to housebreak Chancey so as a result she was passed from family to family. So Beth Ann opened her heart and her family and gave Chancey her forever home. Bless Beth Ann for taking a chance on Chancey.
Chancey became a guest at day care and part of OUR family on August 7, 2006. She is truly a little angel with fur. Absolutely the sweetest little girl. We love it when Chancey comes to day care to spend the day with us. Sometimes she brings along her brother Hunter, a chocolate Lab and her sister Angel, a yellow lab who diligently watch over their little sister. It is sooo sweet how they dote on her. They keep one eye on her at all times. If we pick up Chancey, they are there to see that everything is OK with her.
Chancey has had adversity and obstacles to overcome in her life. She is blind from degenerative eye disease. Beth Ann took her to Ohio State for cataract surgery several years ago and that gave her eyesight for a few years. There is nothing that can be done about the eye disease. Chancey had to have one eye removed because it was so painful. She cannot see out of the other eye, but at least it is not painful to her. Chancey has always had an "attitude". She walked with confidence and she acted like she knew it all. After going blind, Chancey lost her zest for life. Her only ambition was to hide in laundry in the closet and sleep.
A friend told Beth Ann about doggie day care. She decided to try day care for Chancey so that she would have an opportunity to be up and about during the day instead of hiding and sleeping. Beth Ann couldn't believe the difference in Chancey from spending time with us. When she picks her up from day care, Chancey is perky and is "telling" Angel and Hunter at home "what to do" by barking at them. At day care, Chancey walks with confidence and is very proud of herself. Her blindness doesn't stop her here. She likes to mingle a little with her furry friends or wonder off by herself to explore.

On warm afternoons, you can find Chancey outside prancing with her head held high smelling the fresh air and all the wonderful smells and enjoying the warm sunshine. You can almost hear her say "Life is Good". In the colder months, she still likes to be outside but one of her favorite things is to take naps by the dryer when we do laundry because it is nice and cozy warm. She does amazingly well for having a handicap. One of our favorite things is to hold her and give her hugs and kisses.
In fact, Beth Ann tells us that Chancey was feeling sooo good one nice, warm day after doggie day care that she decided to go for an adventurous walk. Chancey walked through many neighborhood streets and even crossed county road 236 before being picked up by some walkers! They call her "McGoo" because she walked that far BLIND and never got hit! Her motto: "I don't know where I'm going, but I'm making good time!" (Yoggy Bear) Chancey also has a funny little thing she does. When she gets nervous, she spins and bites her tail. She won "the most talented" dog in our son Colton's kindergarten class because of her tail biting talent. I guess they saw it as a "gift"?!
Beth Ann thanks us for giving Chancey a new hope and a reason for living. We thank Beth Ann for letting us be part of Chancey's life. It makes us so happy to be able to be a part of making the quality of a dog's life better. It is not just a job to us at day care, they become part of us, part of our hearts. So when their life is better, ours is better also. We love you Chancey. You are our heart. You have left your precious little paw prints on our hearts forever and that is why you are our little Valentine and our "Dog of the Month" for February. We only have one question, Chancey: "Can we be your Valentine?"
